B-29 Superfortress Big Red, S/N 44-84053

A total of 3,970 B-29 Superfortresses were built during production. Many B-29s have been preserved, restored, and are on static display. A total of about 22 complete B-29 airplanes are currently on display in the United States.

The Museum of Aviation is located at the entrance to Robins Air Force Base in Warner-Robins, Georgia. It is situated on 51 acres adjacent to the base, and is the second largest unit in the U.S. Air Force museum system. Robins AFB is located in middle Georgia, 100 miles south of Atlanta and 16 miles south of Macon.

The facility is accredited by the American Association of Museums, and one of only seven aviation collections in the United States to earn such a professional distinction.

Among the many fine aircraft on display is the B-29 Superfortress S/N 44-84053, sometimes called "Big Red". The plane was built at the Bell Bomber Plant in Marietta, Georgia. After serving with the Army Air Corps and later the U.S. Air Force, it was retired in 1956 to the Army Proving grounds at Aberdeen, Maryland. The airplane sat derelict until 1983 when it was recovered and moved to Robins AFB.
